March is here, and with it comes National Nutrition Month® a time for all of us to pause and consider a fundamentalquestion: What are we feeding our children, and what kind of future arewe building for them?

As the Florida State Spokesman for the Protect Our ChildrenProject, I see the direct line between the food on a child's plate and thepotential in their future. The choices we make today about nutrition will echofor generations.

The Theme That Speaks to Us All

This year's theme, "Discoverthe Power of Nutrition," resonates deeply with our mission atProtect Our Children. Because nutrition isn't just about calories and nutrients,it's about power. The power to learn, to grow, to thrive, and tobuild a life of purpose and contribution.

When a child starts theday with a healthy breakfast, they're not just filling their stomach, they're fuelingtheir brain for the classroom. When a family sits down to a meal builtaround fresh vegetables and lean proteins, they're not just eating, they're buildinglifelong habits that prevent chronic disease and promote well-being.

WhatYou Can Do This National Nutrition Month

For Parents andFamilies:

  1. Start small, stay consistent. Simple     changes—packing lunch once a week, adding one vegetable to dinner, choosing water over sugary drinks, build lifetime habits.
  2. Get kids involved. When children participate in shopping and cooking, they're more invested in     eating what they've helped create.
  3. Read labels together. Teach your children to recognize added sugars (ingredients ending in "-ose," syrups, and hidden sweeteners) and make informed choices.
  4. Know your resources. Programs     like WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) provide nutrition     education, healthy foods, and breastfeeding support at no cost to eligible families.

The Bottom Line -Nutritionis not a luxury, it's a necessity. It's the foundation uponwhich healthy children become healthy adults, and healthy adults build healthycommunities.
